In recent weeks, the House Select Committee on Jan. 6 has issued flurries of subpoenas, targeting both well-known names directly connected to Donald Trump and more publicly obscure figures involved in organizing pro-Trump rallies. One of these subpoenas has turned into a contempt indictment against Steve Bannon. Another targeting coup-plotting attorney Jeffery Clark is approaching that same threshold. At the same time, the committee is reportedly negotiating for the appearance of other witnesses, and has supposedly already conducted hundreds of interviews. The problem is that, with few exceptions, these interviews, and much of the committee’s other work, has taken place behind closed doors. Jan. 6 was a shocking day full of images of violence, and bringing real concerns about the continued existence of American democracy. But the select committee has delivered all the impact of dropped Kleenex. That could change in 2022. According to CNBC, Republican Rep. Liz Cheney says there will be lengthy public hearings over the next year. And Cheney seems to be promising that going into the midterm elections, America is going to be treated to an inside look, not just as the violent events of that day but of the steps that it took to reach the point where thousands of Trump supporters tried to overturn the outcome of the election.
