From the 'big lie' to the big grift, Trump’s destroying the RNC

If Donald Trump knows how to do anything, it’s destroy a business. And while the Republican National Committee might not be a “business” in the conventional sense, Trump and his family are doing their level best to bring their special magic to the operation. Yup, they’re gonna burn the whole place down. On Tuesday night, The Washington Post broke the news that prospective new RNC hires were being given a new loyalty test. In recent days, Trump advisers have quizzed multiple employees who had worked in key 2024 states—and who are reapplying for jobs—about their views on the last presidential election, according to people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private interviews and discussions. The interviews have been conducted mostly virtually, as the applicants are based in key swing states. “Was the 2020 election stolen?” one prospective employee recalled being asked in a room with two top Trump advisers. The 2020 election was not stolen, of course. This lie was propagated by Donald Trump, a collection of now-indicted lawyers, aides, and hangers-on, as well as dozens of Republican members of Congress to delegitimize or even invalidate the election’s results. Through investigations and numerous court filings, we now know who constructed the lies, who spread them, what they were meant to achieve, and how the key players knew there was no damn evidence for any of it. So prospective RNC hires were given this litmus test, according to the Post. It suggests that if the hires won’t parrot pro-sedition propaganda on Dear Leader's behalf, there's no room for them in Republicanism. And despite a bit of generic bluster from an RNC spokesperson, nobody's much denying that.

GOP's latest pitch: Everyone hates us. Please send money!

For the most part, political fundraising pitches skew alarmist, bordering on histrionic. That's true of both major U.S. parties, of course. But only one of those parties is currently led by a black hole of iniquity who, when it comes to donor cash, is like a little kid who licks every kolache in the kitchen so no one else can have any. Coincidentally, that’s the same party whose policies are so deeply unpopular they have to frighten people with imaginary crises and, when that fails, outright attempt to steal elections. So what’s their latest tack? Ah, yes. Acknowledging that you don’t want to come to their kegger because they’re super unpopular now—but could you find it in your heart to show up anyway? And, oh, please bring 16 bottles of margarita mix. The Kirkland stuff should be fine.

ICYMI: Trump’s Bible-hustle backlash, new House map is trash

Trump's pretending to be president, with an 'envoy' and everything Trump is conducting shadow diplomacy, and the facts of it are terrifying. The House map was already skewed to the GOP. Now it's even worse Can Democrats reclaim the House against the odds? Some Christians are aghast at Trump's $60 Bible 'hustle' Actual Trump quote: “When I drink my little wine … and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness.” Inside the latest plot to turn a generation against birth control Ban abortion, message against the pill, and turn back the clock on women’s rights a hundred years. Now Biden's dragging Trump's oh-so-busy golf schedule—and it's hilarious Who cares if Biden visited eight swing states in 18 days? Trump won a couple golf tourneys at his own club!

Federal appeals court temporarily delays new state-run court in Mississippi's majority-Black capital

A federal appeals court has temporarily delayed Mississippi officials from creating a state-run court in part of the majority-Black capital city of Jackson starting on Monday. The ruling came just before U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate dismissed requests to block the new court in a ruling filed late Sunday. The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a temporary administrative stay, blocking the court's creation until at least Jan. 5. The decision followed a request from the NAACP. “The NAACP stands firm in our belief that this legislation is inherently undemocratic,« NAACP spokesperson Alicia Mercedes said in a statement Monday. »We will continue to do everything in our power to fight for Jackson residents’ rights to have control over their own institutions and live free from state-driven discrimination.” Michelle Williams, chief of staff for Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, responded to the decision by pointing to a statement she issued Sunday that said the state would continue to defend the law and “perform our duties to help protect the people of Jackson from stifling, suffocating crime that plagues the city. ”

Judge rules former clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses must pay $260K

Former county clerk Kim Davis, who refused to issue marriage licenses in Kentucky to same-sex couples, must pay a total of $260,104 in fees and expenses to attorneys who represented one couple, according to a federal judge's ruling. That's in addition to $100,000 in damages a jury said the former Rowan County clerk should pay the couple who sued. Attorneys for Davis had argued that the fees and costs sought by the attorneys were excessive, but U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning disagreed and said Davis must pay since the men prevailed in their lawsuit, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported. Attorneys for Davis were expected to appeal the ruling. Davis drew international attention when she was briefly jailed in 2015 over her refusal, which she based on her belief that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Davis was released only after her staff issued the licenses on her behalf but removed her name from the form. Kentucky’s state legislature later enacted a law removing the names of all county clerks from state marriage licenses. Campaign Action

Republican primaries are coming. So are Trump’s trials

Donald Trump’s trial on conspiracy and obstruction charges in the 2020 election is slated to begin in Washington, D.C., on Mar. 4. That’s a Monday. The next day is “Super Tuesday,” when 16 states and territories are set to hold their Republican presidential primaries. That includes California, where 169 delegates are up for grabs, and Texas, which has another 161. Another huge slate of delegates is set to be selected on Mar. 12. Considering how likely the start of the trial is to be delayed by Trump’s appeals over immunity, and Trump’s commanding lead among Republicans, it’s entirely possible that Trump could secure the Republican nomination before the first word of testimony is delivered in any of his four upcoming criminal trials.
