Report: Saints QB Taysom Hill to avoid surgery, play through finger injury

A report surfaced earlier on Friday that current New Orleans Saints starting quarterback Taysom Hill could require surgery to repair the injury to the middle finger of his throwing hand he suffered in Thursday's 27-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys that dropped the Saints to 5-7 after they began the season at 5-2.

However, ESPN's Adam Schefter has since offered a positive update on Hill's status ahead of New Orleans' Week 14 game at the New York Jets on Dec. 12:

Saints’ doctors determined that QB Taysom Hill suffered a mallet finger injury Thursday, but it will not require surgery considering it is not as extensive as the one Russell Wilson suffered earlier this year, per source. Hill now will try to play through the injury.

Seattle Seahawks star quarterback Russell Wilson needed surgery following a more severe but similar injury he sustained in October and ultimately missed three starts ahead of Seattle's bye.

Schefter didn't say if Hill will stay at quarterback or return to more of a Swiss Army Knife offensive option for the Saints so a healthy Trevor Siemian can run the offense. While Hill rushed for a team-high 101 yards on 11 attempts in Thursday's defeat, he completed only 19-of-41 passes (46.3%) and tossed four interceptions.

Siemian, meanwhile, went 0-4 as QB1 after Jameis Winston was lost for the season (knee) on Halloween.
