Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: 'Probably fair' to say QB Dak Prescott is in 'slump'

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was an early NFL Most Valuable Player candidate when he carried a calf injury into the bye week. He ultimately missed what became a win at the Minnesota Vikings that improved Dallas to 6-1 back on Halloween.

Prescott returned to action the following week versus the Denver Broncos and, truth be told, hasn't relocated the same level of play he enjoyed before the calf setback. Dallas has gone 3-3 over the past six games, and Prescott matched eight touchdown passes with six interceptions across those contests.

Per Todd Archer of ESPN, head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Monday he doesn't believe Prescott is in a "slump," but owner Jerry Jones offered a different take during his Tuesday appearance on local radio station 105.3 The Fan.

"I don't want to say that, slump, but that's probably fair," Jones remarked. "But it's such a multifaceted evaluation that I would say our offense is definitely away from where we were playing five and six games ago from the standpoint of production."

McCarthy and Jones do, however, agree that Prescott is healthy. Of course, he was sidelined throughout training camp as he worked to recover from the compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle he suffered in October 2020 and, later, a shoulder issue he endured in the summer.

"He missed a lot of time in training camp and he missed a lot of time early with that calf injury, and some will say, 'Well, his mechanics are off a little bit. His feet and his motion aren't quite where they ought to be,'" Jones added about Prescott. "I hear all that and, by the way, that's been discussed but is there merit to it? I don't think so. I just think, just as he's had to his entire career, he will get in, he will figure it out. That's the key thing here. He has no superior in working on it, studying it, taking it to the practice field, repetition. He's as good or better than anybody I've ever seen. And so he will mentally and physically rep this through."

Prescott has an ideal situation to get right this coming Sunday when the 9-4 Cowboys travel to play a 4-9 New York Giants side set to start veteran journeyman Mike Glennon at quarterback with Daniel Jones still sidelined due to a strained neck.
