While the number of immigrants who have more recently become U.S. citizens climbed compared to the 2020 fiscal year, the federal immigration agency responsible for handling this paperwork has seen other service delays that have notably affected immigrants waiting for work permits. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USICS) is supposed to process these types of applications within 180 days. But some delays have stretched to nearly a year, leaving applicants and their families “in a precarious position, at risk of losing their jobs, related benefits and, in some states, their driver’s licenses,” American Immigration Council (AIC) said.
