White parents in school districts and states around the country have gone screaming to school boards and state governments about how their children were being harmed by the teaching of “critical race theory” in schools. Meanwhile, not only is “critical race theory” being used as a euphemism for “anything white racists are uncomfortable with,” but Black students and other students of color have been dealing with racism in schools all along, without it becoming a major national headline or the subject of swift and aggressive action by lawmakers. While real actual critical race theory is not taught in schools, racist incidents happen all the time. “The most recent federal data shows the number of schools where at least one racial hate crime occurred more than doubled from 543 in 2016 to 1,276 in 2018,” NBC News reports. “In a report issued last month, the Government Accountability Office estimated that about 1 in 4 students ages 12 to 18 are exposed to racial, homophobic and antisemitic slurs and anti-immigrant rhetoric at school.” Read more
